students master basic educational goals such as reading, writing, and critical thinking,

Twenty-seven years ago, composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim envisioned a
non-profit theater to nurture the next generation of playwrights. And for 27 years, Young
Playwrights Inc.
has been doing just that: going into classrooms across the country, bringing
innovative and interactive methods of teaching playwriting to thousands of students with

you through improvisation, writing, rewriting, and discussion of the elements
of dramatic structure. You’ll discover how these exercises can be used throughout the
curriculum — not just for the study of theater — and learn how to help your

Just wanted to let you know
I started implementing the Write A Play curriculum in one of my 9th grade
English classes this week and it has been a great success so far! I am
having a great time teaching it and my students are exceeding their own and my
expectations!
When I first announced that
we'd be writing plays, I got a lot of groaning and "I-can't-write-a-play!
They were hesitant to share their work when we first got started. But by
the third day, literally every student in the room had their hand up to share
what they had written!
Thanks so much - this is a
wonderful experience! I've had these students since September, and I feel
like I'm discovering a whole new side of them through playwriting!
