- Young Playwrights Festival National
Playwriting Competition
- "The fact that you take the time not only to read
but to critique each work tells me, as a young writer, that you really care and want to
help young writers succeed. That kind of support is a rare thing..." --
Entrant, 1998 Young Playwrights Festival National Playwriting Competition

- Urban Retreat
- The
Urban Retreat was such a wonderful creative outlet for me its the only place
where you are encouraged to simply write a play! Also, the opportunity to see theater was
invaluable. Every day, I looked forward to discussions about the plays we saw the night
before as well as reading my own work aloud and getting excellent feedback. After the
Urban Retreat, I now know that theater and writing are an integral part of my life.
Lexie Kahanovitz, 1999 Urban Retreat
- Young Playwrights Festival
- "Reality may be big on TV, but clearly some
American teenagers are finding plenty of fertile material in their own imaginations, if
the four short plays in this year's Young Playwrights Festival presentation are anything
to judge by. All share an admirable willingness to take their appealingly human
characters to the edge of fantasy and beyond. This invaluable annual event, founded by
Stephen Sondheim to showcase and encourage writers 18 and under, is celebrating its 20th
anni this season." -- Charles Isherwood,
