STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S THEATER COMPANY TURNS 20

YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS INC. CELEBRATES WITH YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL 2001 OCTOBER 26 – DECEMBER 8
AT THE ALTERNATIVE SPACE AT THE CHERRY LANE THEATRE

VIVENDI UNIVERSAL Provides Major Funding 
For Young Playwrights Festival 2001

October 1, 2001 (New York) --Young Playwrights, Inc., the theatre company that Stephen Sondheim started in 1981 to foster new American playwrights, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with Young Playwrights Festival 2001 at the Alternative Space at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street in New York’s Greenwich Village) October 26 – December 8.  The season will include works by six emerging writers aged 16 – 18, from California, Connecticut, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania, who join the ranks of such Festival finds as Kenneth Lonergan, Rebecca Gilman and Evan Smith.  The Young Playwrights Festival runs Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., with a special evening performance on October 28 at 7 p.m.   

New to the Young Playwrights Festival is the WRITE A PLAY! Intergenerational Performance Series, which will bring together young people and seniors to exchange ideas through pre-performance playwriting workshops and post-performance discussions.  The WRITE A PLAY! performances take place beginning November 30 at 11:30 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. and tickets are $12.

Young Playwrights Festival 2001

Johnny Likaboot Kills His Father!! by Yelena Elkind, 16, Brooklyn, NY.   A young writer works out his daddy issues in some very creative prose.  Johnny Likaboot Kills His Father!! is directed by Richard Caliban.

Conference Time by Jeb G. Havens, 17, Ellington, CT.  A dysfunctional committee of absurdist characters fruitlessly founders toward consensus in this fast-paced romp.  Conference Time is directed by Padraic Lillis.

Gorgeous Raptors by Lucy Alibar-Harrison, 18, Monticello, FL.  Ugly Kaballah, the only Jewish girl in her small Georgia town, finds safety and power in a rich fantasy life, leading to the birth of the “raptor girls.”   Gorgeous Raptors is directed by Beth F. Milles.

Nursery by Julia Jarcho, 18, New York City, NY.   An insightful and theatrical examination of the impact of violence, presciently penned before the Columbine High School tragedy.  Nursery is directed by Brett W. Reynolds. 

Write A Play! Intergenerational Performances

From The Mouths of Babes by Eva Anderson, 18, Los Angeles, CA.  In this comedy, three nursery school students decide the fate of their teacher, a woman accused of hoarding juice boxes and making kids sit in the corner.

It’s Hard Work Being A Playa by J.C. Newbern, 18, Philadelphia, PA.  ‘Motown Townsend,’ a high school student and self-professed professional playa meets his match when he goes after a beautiful but no-nonsense playette.

Young Playwrights Festival 2001 will feature Lighting Design by Pat Dignan, Set Design by Michael Brown, Costume Design by Miguel Angel Huidor and Sound Design by Jill B.C. DuBoff.  The acting company includes Sarah Bragin, Shannon Emerick, Steven Hauck, Cynthia Hood, Ann Hu, Brad Malow, Geoffrey Molloy, Michael Mosley, and Robin L. Taylor.  The 20th Anniversary season of the Young Playwrights Festival is sponsored in part by a leadership grant from Vivendi Universal.  “I believe Young Playwrights Inc. is one of the most exciting arts education organizations in the nation today,” said Nancy Morgan, Manager of Public Affairs for Vivendi Universal.   “Young Playwrights has been remarkably effective in motivating young people to write, galvanizing professional playwrights to help them, and developing new, diverse audiences and writers for the theatre.  I’m convinced that Young Playwrights Inc. has the capacity to foster creative expression in an increasing number of young people, enriching American theatre in the process.
