Any student from around the region is invited to submit their plays to Philadelphia Young Playwrights’ Annual Playwriting Festival. Over 1,000 students submit their scripts each year. Members of Young Playwrights’ Literary Committee read each script and provide students with individualized written feedback. First, second and third place distinctions are awarded at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Here’s What To Do:

The choice of the subject is up to you.

You may submit more than one play.

Scripts must be in Standard American format. For a guide, see below.

Scripts submitted to previous Young Playwrights’ Festivals are not eligible without significant revision.

Scripts must be entirely written by one or more people who are age 19 or younger, or in high school, on July 1, 2013.

We accept submissions from the following five counties: Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery.

Monologues, musicals, and screenplays are not eligible, nor are adaptations of other authors’ works.

Scripts not meeting these criteria will not be considered for submission.

Please Note: By submitting your play to the Playwriting Festival, you are giving Philadelphia Young Playwrights, a nonprofit organization, permission to produce your play, or to use your play, now or in the future, for other purposes such as play readings and in published anthologies of winning plays, without money being paid to you. Philadelphia Young Playwrights will retain a copy of your play for five years after the year of your submission.

Submitting Online

1. Please save you play as a Microsoft Word Document (save as .doc), with the name of the document as Play Title, Author Last Name.
e.g.- The Magic Sandwich, Smith

2. Make sure the first page of your play contains your play title, your name and your school.

3. Fill out the Electronic Submission Form by clicking the link below. At the end of the form, you will upload your play.

4. Once you have uploaded your play, you will receive a confirmation email. Please review your submission info to make sure you have entered everything correctly!

If you are submitting more than one play, you must fill out a Submission Form for each play.
If your play is group authored, each author must complete a Submission Form and upload the play.

Submitting by Mail

1. Print and fill out 3 copies of the Official Cover Sheet. You can download the Cover Sheet below. You may also get a copy of the official cover sheet by calling the office at 215-665-9226. NOTE: An official cover sheet is required for submission.

2. Print out 3 copies of you play, and staple a cover sheet to each copy. Scripts must be typed, page numbered and staples with one staple in the upper left side, or they will not be read.
