YPI ANNOUNCES WRITE A PLAY! NYC's APRIL 1 DEADLINE

Prepare With Free Workshops:
MARCH 12, 2002

February 6, 2002 (New York) -- TAKE DRAMATIC ACTION! Young Playwrights Inc. and AOL Time Warner invite New York City Public School students to participate in WRITE A PLAY! NYC  -- -- deadline: April 1st 2002.

The 18 year-old Contest celebrating the artistic accomplishments of young NYC writers began as the New York City High School Playwriting Contest and is now open to students in grades K-12. The plays will be evaluated in three divisions: Elementary School (Grades K-5; monologues and scenes are also accepted), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and High School (Grades 9-12).  Each entrant to the Contest will receive a detailed evaluation of her/his work, along with a special certificate of accomplishment.  A ceremony featuring the presentation of awards and the performance of scenes from prize-winning plays will be hosted by The New Victory Theatre on June 4th, 2002 at 4pm.

To help students get going on their plays, Young Playwrights Inc. is offering a free one-hour WRITE A PLAY! workshop for students and a one-hour intro to the WRITE A PLAY! Teacher Training Institute for teachers in each of the five boroughs. Led by one of YPI’s specially trained Teaching Artists, participants will be introduced to Young Playwrights Inc.’s nationally recognized curriculum for teaching playwriting.  Brought to the classrooms of over 5,000 students nationwide each year, WRITE A PLAY! reinforces literacy, encourages self-expression, develops cooperative skills, builds self-esteem, and enables students to see themselves as artists.  Workshops will be held on Tuesday, March 12th in each of the following locations:
