SWP Submission Policy
The Southern Writers’ Project of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival accepts original, full-length scripts and adaptations year-round that have not been professionally produced. Because we are dedicated to supporting both emerging and established playwrights, we accept unsolicited manuscripts as well as those submitted by agents.
Scripts must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- You are a Southern Writer.
- Your script is set in the South, or deals specifically with Southern issues, characters, or themes.
Submissions that meet these criteria are considered for the Southern Writers’ Project Festival of New Plays, an annual weekend of readings of new work. These plays are then considered for production in subsequent ASF seasons.
If your play is an adaptation, please secure the permission to the underlying rights prior to submission. Full length plays only, please. Submissions are limited to one play per author per season. Musicals and theatre for young audiences should send a letter of inquiry first. We prefer receiving submissions electronically. Please send a bio and synopsis of your play with the complete manuscript. You will receive an acknowledgment of receipt of your script, generally by email. Please note that, due to the high volume of submissions we receive, we do not have the resources to provide comments or feedback and will only contact you if we wish to develop or produce your play.
